1. For fruit smoothies, always use frozen fruit. This way you won't have to water it down with ice. For veggie smoothies, if you would like them to be extra cold, you can either freeze chopped leafy greens in a little bit of water, in ice cube trays, or you can pour it over ice, and then either drink it on the rocks, or strain it, like a martini.
2. Make sure you use plenty of liquid! Measure out the liquid before everything else so that it's easy to see how much you have. If your blender has measurements on the pitcher, you can use these more easily that way, too.
3. If there isn't enough liquid, you will know because the top of the smoothie won't be moving, when the blender is on. If the top isn't swirling, turn off the blender, wait until it is totally finished moving (otherwise you can damange the mechanism), add more liquid, and then either stir or shake the pitcher before starting the blender back up.
4. If using tea as your liquid, don't use hot tea! Your blender will not be pleased, and your smoothie will not be cold. If you really want a tea-based smoothie right away, and you don't have any cold tea brewed, brew hot tea, and then cool it down. You can accomplish this by either making a concentrate (brewing your tea extra strong, and then mixing it with an equal amount of cold water), or by brewing the tea, pouring it over ice, and then shaking or stirring it like a martini.
5. Always blend a little bit longer than you think you should. A common mistake for people who are new to smoothie-making is to get impatient, and then find that their smoothie is too chunky, and has pockets of liquid. Just wait a few seconds longer, and it will be smooth and delicious! A great way to tell if it's done is to look at the color. If the color isn't uniform, it's probably not done.
6. Have fun, and be creative!
